Impact de l'aquaculture marine sur l'environnement : aspects juridiques et économiques ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.
Aquaculture is an economic activity which is characterised by a great dependence on environmental conditions. Therefore aquaculture development is subdued to institutional context which defines the rules for use and conservation of the environment. This paper analyses the impact of marine environment regulations on economic operating of aquaculture enterprises and on industrial dynamics. Because aquaculture enterprises use a collective good, an economic approach of aquaculture has to take into account not only the relations between enterprises and environment, but also the relations between the enterprises themselves, through production externalities. In this study, several economic tools are considered in order to incite enterprises to integrate pad of...

Impact of removing straw from wheat and barley fields: A literature review NWISRL
Tarkalson, D.D.; Brown, B.; Kok, H.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
The sustainability of straw removal from wheat and barley fields from the standpoint of its effects on soil properties and nutrient cycling is a concern. A recent literature review reveals that there is no negative effect of small grain straw removal on soil organic carbon (SOC) content with irrigated conditions. With rainfed conditions, the results could be more variable and depend on site productivity. Large amounts of nutrients are removed when straw is removed, accelerating the rate of nutrient depletion and cost of replacing these nutrients.

Impact of Water Supply Limitations from Federal Decisions in South Texas AgEcon
Robinson, John R.C.; Michelsen, Ari M.; Gollehon, Noel R..
This study extends and refines a previous model and provides estimates of the economic value of water shortages from shortfalls in Mexican deliveries to the U.S. In the process, we identify and evaluate a range of crop choices, appropriate irrigation technology use, water source substitution, and other mitigation strategies used by farmers to deal with water shortages. The effects of exogenous crop price and yield risk, as well as and other structural considerations are incorporated in deriving the marginal value of irrigation water for reference drought years. Results show that South Texas farmers react to risk by diversifying their crop mix, which in turn has implications for the imputed value of water and soil resources. The derived shadow price of...

Impacts of changing water price and availability on irrigated dairy farms in northern Victoria AgEcon
Ho, Christie K.M.; Armstrong, Dan P.; Doyle, Peter T.; Malcolm, Bill.
Farming systems throughout the Murray-Darling Basin are under increasing scrutiny from the perspective of ecological sustainability of farm and catchment systems. In northern Victoria, the dairy industry is a major user of water, and contributes to the environmental issues. Changes in irrigation water price, availability and policy will invariably impact on the viability of dairy farming in this region, but the diversity of dairy farm systems suggests that the impact will vary between farms. Two case study farms, a 'water reliant' farm and a 'fodder reliant' farm, were used to examine economic and social impacts of changes in water price, availability and policy.

Impacts of considering climate variability on investment decisions in Ethiopia AgEcon
Block, Paul J.; Strzepek, Kenneth M.; Rosegrant, Mark W.; Diao, Xinshen.
Extreme interannual variability of precipitation within Ethiopia is not uncommon, inducing droughts or floods and often creating serious repercussions on agricultural and non-agricultural commodities. An agro-economic model, including mean climate variables, was developed to assess irrigation and road construction investment strategies in comparison to a baseline scenario over a 12-year time horizon. The motivation for this work is to evaluate whether the inclusion of climate variability in the model has a significant effect on prospective investment strategies and the resulting country-wide economy. The mean climate model is transformed into a variable climate model by dynamically adding yearly climate-yield factors, which influence agricultural...

Incentives for Residential Water Conservation: Water Price, Revenue, and Consumer Equity in Florida AgEcon
Rawls, Colin; Borisova, Tatiana; Berg, Sanford; Burkhardt, Jeffrey.
Economic theory suggests that price incentives can be used to encourage water conservation in residential consumers. Conservation water rates are designed to send price signals that encourage households to reduce discretionary water use in the long term. However, it is not always clear that conservation rates effectively provide meaningful incentives. Utilities themselves may also not have strong incentives to implement conservation rates. If conservation rates have a negative impact on revenue, or if they lead to increased revenue variability, utilities may have a disincentive to use them. In addition, block pricing structures (where unit water rate increases with water usage) may be inequitable, in the sense that the “revenue burden” is borne...

Azeem Ali; International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Lahore, Pakistan; Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan; a.shah@cgiar.org.
Conventional wisdom in many agricultural systems across the world is that farmers cannot, will not, or should not pay the full costs associated with surface water delivery. Across Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, only a handful can claim complete recovery of operation, maintenance, and capital costs; across Central and South Asia, fees are lower still, with farmers in Nepal, India, and Kazakhstan paying fractions of a U.S. penny for a cubic meter of water. In Pakistan, fees amount to roughly USD 1-2 per acre per season. However, farmers in Pakistan spend orders of magnitude more for diesel fuel to pump groundwater each season, suggesting a latent willingness to spend for water that, under the right conditions, could...

India Agricultural Policy Review AgEcon
Gilmour, Brad; Gurung, Rajendra Kumar.
With a population of about 1.1 billion, India is expected to overtake China as the world's most populous country by 2030. India's economy ranks as Asia's third largest, after Japan and China, and is now one of the world's fastest growing. While growth has led to significant reductions in poverty, India still ranks among the world's low income countries in terms of income per capita. Nevertheless, economic growth has resulted in a burgeoning middle-class. India's agriculture sector accounts for 18% of GDP, and employs around 60% of the workforce. Rice, wheat, cotton, oilseeds, jute, tea, sugarcane, milk and potatoes are India's major agricultural commodities. With its growing urban middle-class and increasing influence in global affairs, India's policies...

Influence of Climate Variability on the Market Price of Water in the Gila-San Francisco Basin AgEcon
Pullen, Jennifer L.; Colby, Bonnie G..
Emerging water markets in the western United States have slowly developed as usage patterns have changed over time. This article develops an econometric model for the Gila-San Francisco Basin. Results indicate the market price of water has risen in response to drought and market conditions. Analysis shows a statistically significant relationship between the price and quantity of water transferred, year the transaction occurred, location where the transaction occurred, new use of the water right, and whether the transaction occurred during a drought year. Using the Standard Precipitation Index, we find negotiated prices are higher during dry years.

Influence of soil properties and test conditions on sorption and desorption of testosterone NWISRL
Zhang, T.C.; Ma, Rui; Bartelt-Hunt, S.L.; Qi, Yong; Kranz, W.L.; Snow, D.D.; Mader, T.L.; Shapiro, C.A.; Shelton, D.P.; Van Donk, S.J.; Tarkalson, D.D..
In this study, batch sorption and desorption experiments were conducted for testosterone using four agricultural soils and five clay minerals. Significant differences in sorption behavior were observed between abiotic and biotic systems. The Freundlich sorption coefficient Kf (µg per g)/(µg per mL) ranged from 8.53 to 74.46 for soils and from 35.28 to 1243 for clays. The maximum sorption capacity (µg per g) of soils ranged from 25.25 to 440.61 for soils and 168.46 to 499.84 for clays. Correlation of sorption model parameters with soil properties indicated that both clay content and soil organic matter are important variables in predicting testosterone sorption behavior. Observed testosterone desorption from agricultural soils ranged from approximately 14...

Influence of water restriction on the performance and organ development of young broilers R. Bras. Zootec.
Viola,Teresa Herr; Ribeiro,Andréa Machado Leal; Penz Júnior,Antônio Mário; Viola,Eduardo Spillari.
The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% water restriction (WR) on broiler performance, behavior, organ development (heart, leg, proventriculus and gizzard, liver, and intestines), and intestinal micrometry. Four hundred and eighty ROSS 308 male broilers were raised in battery cages measuring 0.72 m², from 1 to 21 days of age. Feed was offered ad libitum, and environmental temperatures were kept in thermoneutral conditions. Water intake was estimated based on a control group, two days older than the experimental birds, with same initial weight. A linear reduction on bird performance, duodenal villi height, and fresh organs weight were observed as WR increased. At 21 days of age, for each 1% WR, a weight loss of...

Integrated participatory modelling of irrigated agriculture: the case study of the reorganisation of a water management system in Italy AgEcon
Bazzani, Guido Maria.
The paper presents an application of the new version of the 'Decision Support for Irrigated agriculture' DSIrr designed to integrate water and agricultural policy analysis and to support participatory decision process. The tool is a scenario manager for bio-economic farm models considering climatic, agronomic, hydraulic, socio-economic and environmental aspects. The paper offers some insight on the decomposition approach adopted to integrate economic analysis at different scales by illustrating a case study conducted in Italy to support an ex ante evaluation of a water management system reorganisation. Reduce water consumption is a strategic objective which pricing policy cannot address given technical constraints. The replacement of the existing...

INVESTIGATING THE ECONOMIC AND WATER QUALITY EFFECTS OF THE 2003 CAP REFORM ON ARABLE CROPPING SYSTEMS: A SCOTTISH CASE STUDY AgEcon
Mouratiadou, Ioanna; Russell, Graham; Topp, Cairistiona; Louhichi, Kamel.
The 2003 Common Agricultural Policy Reform aimed to promote the socio-economic and environmental sustainability of agricultural systems. An important question is how far the Reform has indeed encouraged farmers to contribute to achieving broad economic and environmental goals. The economic and water resource effects of the Reform have been explored for the case study area of the Lunan catchment, which is typical of Scottish arable cropping areas. Land use data analysis, bio-physical modelling and bio-economic modelling were used in combination to identify the effects of a range of scenarios. The results indicate only small changes in the cropping pattern and associated economic and water quality indicators as a result of the Reform, with the main changes...
